Outlaw Hobo Pilots! ![]() Why do people buy airplanes that have glass cockpits if they never plan on flying IFR or doing any difficult navigation? Why do airports that only have Category III weather maybe twice a year maintain all the ground-based equipment to offer the approach to the very few aircraft equipped to shoot it? The Light Sport Pilot rules have been a good first step, but let’s take a deep breath and be real here. Most people who fly Cubs, Champs and even the new light sport airplanes rarely cross paths with the FAA (unless they just crashed) so having a medical certificate was really not such a big deal to them before these so-called wonderful rules about the medical certificate came into being. Show of hands – how many people know a person who flies without a medical or has a medical he or she wouldn’t have if they told the entire truth during their exam? Plus, if you are member number five or six of a Cessna 150 partnership, would it devastate you if they suspended your license because you didn’t have a current medical? Let’s say they do suspend you for flying your Champ in a less than legal manner – would it keep you from flying it on the occasional nice weather Saturday? Without cutting safety are there techniques you use to cut your flying costs? Personally, I’d like to see owning and flying a light sport airplane to be about as expensive as owning a used ski boat or RV. So, chime in and let’s here from those outlaws out there who have found a way to continue flying through this expanding cloud of government regulation and those crazy $150k light sport airplanes. 2008-12-18 17:02:33 GMT

I'd love to comment, but I have a fear Big Brother (FAA) might be watching. Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get you! --Joanne <mailto:flieger87@hotmail.com>

I certainly wouldn't encourage anybody here to break the FARs even though the airlines do it every single minute of every day. If people from the FAA are watching I would encourage them to buy my new book, THE CEO OF THE COCKPIT, available on kevincreates.com!

There are so many great ideas to share over a cool one, that you really need to come to Spearfish (KSPF) on June 24th thru 27th and we all can discuss the many ways of doing what you ask. The first rule is NEVER TALK ABOUT LOSING YOUR MEDICAL OR HAVING YOUR LICENSE SUSPENDED, then others will think that your flights are just ordinary (and normal) daily event where you just break the FARs on Take off and landing. --Snoopy
