Pilot Pilot Joy Joy!
photo

I want to bring the joy back into flying. Remember when you flew purely for fun and adventure? A time when recreational and sport flying sport pilot wasn’t a category of flying, but was flying itself?

Can anybody out there remember the thrill of seeing houses look like model railroad layouts and the pure fun that pulling a few gees could bring?

You don’t need a medical certificate to fly, you don’t need an airplane, and it isn’t even all that important to be a pilot. I’m going to start a bold five year mission to explore all the ways to enjoy flying on the cheap and with a sense of joy and excitement.

I am getting a little tired of wondering where I can find $300,000 spare dollars in my couch just so I can buy an entry level airplane.  I don’t think we ought to fly junk, but I don’t think many people can really afford a half million dollar toy. If people can have fun with inexpensive boats and cars why can’t we have a blast dividing a $25,000 Champ ten ways and all fly for a few dollars an hour?

I’ll add more later, but for now start thinking of ways to enjoy flying without spending much money and share it with everybody here. Remember, when you started flying you didn’t do so because you wanted to find a new way to spend money and look cool. You simply wanted to fly.

Every Friday, I fly some 47 knot miles to have coffee with a bunch of old geezers like me, and we talk about the good old days when we flew everything without a check out. Free flying so to speak. Now a rancher friend, who is not too dumb, catches me as I go by and bums a ride along. So there you go, flying on the cheap, just find someone who is always flying somewhere and wants company. Or move to the "sticks" where hangers are cheaper and fuel is also, that is if you are capable of flying off grass.

Karl,

Thanks for the comment. I'm capable on grass alright. Currently flying a champ and a husky off of grass and in the past have flown PT-19s, Cessna 120/140's and a few other taildraggers. Way more fun than 10,000 foot long 'uber runways.

At work I am constantly being asked to contribute to co-workers kids fund raising efforts, candy, pizza, etc, etc. I took the hint and pasted a picture of an airplane to a coffee can with the the polite plea written as below:
"Joanne's airplane fund, any and all contributions accepted and appreciated."
(I've raised $2.34 so far)

Joan,

What a great idea! I'm adding an airplane for me to our church's monthy charity drawing. We put little slips of paper in a basket and draw one out to see who gets the hundred or so dollars from our continuous junk sale. An extra hundred would go a long way toward my dream!

Ideas for flying on the cheap.
My local Frontier pilot trades out my biannual for three touch and goes at my grass strip. Good for him (to be legal in a taildragger) and good for me(to be legal period). I'll never make an instructor, as I can not stand even 1 degree deviation from the center line on landing.
When you do get some free time at the wheel or stick, brag up the airplane and the owner until he can't stand it any more. example: "Joe was such a good pilot host that he kept the ball to the right, just so I could see ahead out my side window". When it becomes your turn to be Pilot, Return the favor with full right rudder.
Hang around the airport and be present at every fly in. Just listen and show your appreciation for every story told. Next week, ask em to repeat the stories. Wouldn't be long before airplane owners will be asking you to "exercise their airplane for them.
